Students and engineers discuss the industry of the future

11/19/2024 | Students, IT experts and engineers from the IG Metall districts of Berlin-Brandenburg-Saxony, Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt came together for the eighth time to discuss future trends in industry and the world of work.

The participants were able to gain practical insights during two excursions: They visited the EUREF Campus in Berlin-Schöneberg and ASML. At the EUREF Campus, participants were given a practical demonstration of how the energy and mobility transition is becoming a reality. Energy autonomy, sustainable mobility and sustainable construction are being tested here as models. Today, more than 7,000 people are working and researching on these topics at this location. Students find good options here for internships, part-time jobs and also exciting fields of work afterwards.

At ASML, students gained an impression of how work is carried out at an important company in the semiconductor industry. ASML has built up a lot of employment at its Berlin site in recent years. The modules manufactured here are sent to chip manufacturers all over the world and are installed there. The company builds critical high-precision components for the structuring of silicon wafers on which computer chips are based. However, this company is not only interesting because of its product range, but also because of the working conditions. A very good collective agreement was fought for by the employees and offers excellent prospects for future career starters.

After the two tours, the meeting continued at the Berlin Pichelssee seminar center. Here, Dirk Schulze, District Director of IG Metall Berlin-Brandenburg-Saxony, outlined the current economic and political challenges facing students and IG Metall. He emphasized the efforts to ensure good working conditions for students. This was followed by a lively discussion of IG Metall's industrial policy program and the addition of further points.

On the second day of the event, the focus was on the workshops, which revolved around the topic of the future of work. With “scrum”, an agile form of work could be tested and evaluated. In the workshop “Scientific writing with AI”, the potential, challenges and obstacles for students in dealing with AI became clear. In their workshop, Enrico Wiesner from Siemens Energy and Jan Franke from IAV provided information on the potential of engineering networks. On the one hand, in the operational context of managing the transformation, and on the other, in the social sphere. Here, Enrico is involved in the Social Energy Network e.V. The association offers solutions for electricity and water supply in rural areas, which gives our partners and customers a better economic position and contributes to environmental protection by combining renewable energies with innovative water pump technology.

In conclusion, Jan Otto, first authorized representative of IG Metall Berlin, combined the topics discussed at the conference into a panorama of the future. He showed that transformation can be shaped - together with the employees! To this end, he presented the approach and ideas of the Berlin office.
In addition to the content-related part, there was also plenty of relaxed networking and fun. We look forward to seeing many faces again next year.
